From the epic scale of the Rocky Mountains to the myriad of things to do along the front range of Colorado, you could certainly say that this state has a lot going on for itself. It makes sense, then, that the residents of this state have a lot going on for them as well. It’s hardly any secret that Colorado is quite the active state here in the United States. The combination of culture, natural beauty and access to fun activities has put this state on the map as the fittest state in the country. Why is this the case, exactly? There are probably too many reasons to support Colorado’s fit reputation, but the Fort Collins Fitness Festival is here to tackle this topic in another blog post about our wonderful home state.
Our Fitness Festival Supports Colorado’s Healthy Reputation
You can think of the Fort Collins Fitness Festival as representative of this state’s active culture. Our goal is to unite Northern Colorado and residents all along the front range and beyond to get together and celebrate all things related to fitness, athleticism, outdoor recreation, and more. This first-time fitness celebration will be one of the best Fort Collins outdoor activities to ever take place, and we want you to be a part of it! We probably won’t even scratch the surface, but let’s look at some of the reasons as to why Colorado continues to be the fittest state in the country.
It Starts With What We Eat
Playing outdoors and spending time burning our energy in the mountains wouldn’t be possible without the fuel that we put into our bodies. Well, if Colorado is what it eats, then it would largely consist of organic produce, granola, and other healthy foods.
As it turns out, Colorado is home to some 270 individual certified organic farms and ranches statewide. That’s over 161,000 acres of organic farmland, and access to locally grown organic food is only getting easier for Coloradans. Organic acreage has skyrocketed by a whopping 40,000 acres from 2014 to 2016.
Is A 100,000-Square Mile Playground Enough To Explore?
If location is everything, then the mountains are everything. Colorado has literally thousands of miles of trails to explore in 42 state parks, five National Park Services units and 8.4 million acres of public land. What’s not to love about exploring around in some of the most breathtakingly beautiful sites in the world? It’s almost impossible not to be active when you consider the environment that we’re constantly immersed in by living in this epic state.
For Many, The Commute Is Nice
With all of this incredible land to explore, it makes sense that about 90 percent of Coloradans report that they participate in some form of outdoor recreation every year. However, it’s not always strictly for fun – thanks to efforts made by communities around the state, many Coloradans actually begin their workday with an ‘active commute.’ In 2015, Bicycling.com named Boulder, Denver and Fort Collins and 10th, 11th and 12th most bike-friendly cities (respectively) in the country. That’s quite the accomplishment coming from somewhere that’s as sparsely populated as Colorado compared to other parts of the United States.
So, pedaling to work rather than waiting behind the wheel of a car in traffic definitely has a positive impact on Colorado’s health. According to the British Journal of Sports Medicine, bike commuting burns an average of 540 calories per hour, and an Australian study found that men who cycle to work are significantly less likely to be obese than their non-cycling counterparts.
